Book Review: Christian Pregnancy Books

Being a first time mum, there are many things I don’t know. Other than talking to other experienced mothers, reading books helps a lot too – being a deep well of resource and knowledge. But of course, do be discerning and read with a critical mind and not take in everything wholesale. And not all books are good, so there’s no point in finishing a book if it’s just not for you. To help you shortlist a few, the following Christian pregnancy books are recommended by fellow mums and here’s my take of them.

If you like any of them, do click through the Book Depository and Amazon links to purchase them (these are affiliate links which will help me keep this website going. So, thank you! :)). Book depository is significantly cheaper than the prices I found in my church’s bookstore, so wanted to help you save pennies too! And to help you save further, get 4% cashback if you purchase from Shopback for the first time. Praying Through Your Pregnancy (A week-by-week guide)

by Jennifer Polimino and Carolyn Warren

Sypnosis

Praying Through Your Pregnancy shows a mother how to provide an early head start for her child through the power of prayer. With fresh spiritual insight, each chapter reveals what is happening with the baby’s development that week, starting with the very first moment of conception, when God begins the creation of either a boy or a girl.

Readers will learn how the confidence they place in God affects the healthy development of their precious growing baby, and how to reduce their own stress and anxiety by looking to the Creator. In this interactive guidebook, the author shares excerpts from her pregnancy journal as an encouragement for women to write their own thoughts and feelings, and each chapter ends with a Mother’s Prayer and Scriptures for Meditation.

Review

This is more of a prayer guide book where there are pointers and sample prayers for you to pray from your conception, first trimester through to labour.

The sample prayers for certain days are good because it will guide you to pray for very specific things that you don’t even know to pray over. For example, of the baby’s vocal cord development: “Help his mouth, throat, larynx and windpipe to form as they should. And, Lord, I pray that my child will grow up to be a person who is known for speaking words of life.”

Then for week 23:

  • Notes: “Your baby’s lungs are making huge progress this week, with blood vessels expanding and preparing your child to breathe after birth.”
  • Prayer: “Dear Lord, I thank You for breathing the breath of life into my baby. Lord, please help my baby’s lungs to continue to grow and develop and to form perfectly.”

However I remember I had to filter some of the words and experiences she shared in the book. They are not altogether edifying and I don’t want to mull over them and have them take root in me. So read with God’s good promises and finished work in mind and reject those experience or symptoms that you don’t want happening to you.

Overall still a good prayer book to guide me to pray over specific areas for the baby. Moreover it helps me to set aside time to pray consistently for my baby throughout the pregnancy journey.

This book also contains specific prayer points, and prayers for these areas. There are also testimonies from women who applied God’s Word to their lives to overcome amazing odds and have now received their personal breakthrough!

Review

The book covers a wide range of topics from pre to post-pregnancy. So if you bought the book while pregnant, then you probably have to skip the first few chapters. Or simply read those chapters in your subsequent pre-pregnancy journey. Then again, the chapters may not be relevant to all mothers because they address issues about infertility.

However, the latter chapters are still useful, especially the declarations. They help you put your perspectives back to God and His Word. Our pregnancy and delivery experience although in the world, doesn’t need to be of the world. The book addresses very real issues that you might face during the pregnancy journey. Along with practical information about the various situations, there are also appending prayer pointers and relevant bible verses that you can use to pray with.

Supernatural Birth

by Jackie Mize

Sypnosis

Pregnancy and childbirth are often depicted as a time of sickness and mood swings for women followed by twelve to twenty hours of pain and hard labor. Many women have been told they can never conceive. Others have suffered the pain of conceiving and miscarrying. Have you had enough of this picture?

Supernatural Childbirth is a practical and realistic look at God’s promises for conception, pregnancy and delivery. This is a personal testimony of how one couple overcame defeat and triumphed in God’s plan! Jackie Mize had been told she could never have children. However, by unlocking powerful truths and dynamic faith principles she and her husband, Terry found in the Bible, they now have four miracle children! This exciting book shares with you these truths and faith principles.

Review

Most of the truths mentioned in this book can also be found in the book mentioned above: God’s Plan for Pregnancy. However, if you are someone who doesn’t like to read, this book would be more suitable for you! The book is already very thin, and yet almost one-third of the book contains testimonies of other women who experienced their own supernatural childbirth.

The rest of the book is more about the personal testimony of Jackie Mize and Terry with biblical truths they held on to for the journey. So it’s a very short read, good for time-pressed mothers. If you want more meat, this book might not be for you.
