Postpartum Corset with Madam Partum
For my first pregnancy, I didn’t like the cloth stomach binder the Malay massage lady provided. I also had to return it to her after my sessions ended (not very hygienic eh?), so I used another binder/corset I got as a free gift for the rest of my confinement. Even though it’s uncomfortable to wear, I know I had to wrap my stomach to make my postpartum bulge much smaller.
Hence, this time, I decided to shop for a good one. I was inundated with choices. There are many types of stomach wrap in the market, with varying price points. I didn’t know which was good. Thankfully, I had massage sessions with Madam Partum and thus got to know about their signature corset.
Instead of cloth binding, Madam Partum encourages mummies to put on their body sculpting corset. It is specially designed in 3 separate pieces for postpartum mummies to get back to pre-pregnancy shape faster.
Benefits of the Postpartum Corset
Wearing a good corset like Madam Partum’s brings about many benefits. For a start, it prevents postpartum abdominal muscle sag and “tucks” in floppy and loose skin that was stretched by the pregnancy bump. It also provides light compression to help the mother’s uterus shrink.
Other than shaping and contouring the postpartum body, it relieves pelvic, abdomen and back pain because of its good body support. The corset’s support also aligns the abdomen and lower back to correct improper posture.
This corset, together with Madam Partum’s massages, significantly shrunk my 5 months’ pregnant looking stomach in just three weeks. Hooray! Also, I find myself standing and sitting up straighter, getting into good posture instead of my usual slouch. Hopefully this corset, along with the prenatal Pilates I did, will help me get into habitual good posture and thus reducing my lower back and pelvic pains in the long run.
Wearing of the Corset
Madam Partum’s corset can be worn from the 5th day post natural delivery, or after 2 weeks for caesarean delivery. If unsure, please seek advice from your doctor.
Start with a couple of hours, and from there increase the hours to your comfort level. Madam Partum recommends wearing it everyday all the time, except during shower, for 30 to 60 days postpartum. Or minimum for 6 to 8 hours daily. Personally, the most I could do was 6 hours.
What I like about this binder is its breathable material, making the binding experience better than the previous one. Moreover, I can easily put the corset on as and when I want. Unlike the case of the Jamu/Malay massage, I don’t have to wait for the massage therapist to wear for me.
What’s more, I can easily wash the corset in the washing machine with other laundry. Remember to put it in a laundry bag! I also put on the gentle/handwash cycle just in case. In fact, washing the corset frequently is recommended by Madam Partum.
How to wear the Corset?
This 3-piece corset is flexible and can be adjusted to individual statures, be it short or long torso.
The Three Layers of the Corset
- Layer 1: Belly Belt (the belt without the adjustable straps)
- Layer 2: Waist Belt (the biggest piece)
- Layer 3: Pelvic Belt (the smallest piece) – Uppermost Piece
During breastfeeding, nap or meal times, the upper piece (3rd layer) can be removed while keeping the waist tight with the two other pieces. Alternatively, you can shift that piece to the hip to tighten it while giving your upper abdomen some breathing space.
Here is a demonstration by the therapist to wear the corset:
Important instructions while wearing the Corset:
- Do Kegel exercise
- Breathe in and tuck in the tummy
Make sure you don’t wrap yourself too tightly, especially after a caesarean (“c-sect”) birth. Too much compression on the c-sect wound can slow down the healing process. You should be able to breathe comfortably and not feel restricted in your movements when wearing the corset. However, once you adapt to the tightness or you want to expedite the “slimming” process, you can wrap it tighter as you desire. That’s the beauty of flexibility with this corset.
